Getting Started
RUC Pass is a simple, modern way to buy Road User Charges (RUC) in New Zealand. Instead of dealing with NZTA directly every time, you get a RUC Pass linked to your vehicle, top it up however you like, and we handle the rest. Your RUC licence is issued instantly.
Choose the pass that suits you (Standard, Student, or Super Gold) and create a free account. Once you've linked your vehicle's plate number, you're ready to start topping up. No contracts, no subscriptions.
RUC Pass is designed for light vehicles (up to 3,500 kg). This covers most cars, SUVs, utes, vans, and light commercial vehicles that are diesel-powered or electric and require road user charges.
Yes. You can link multiple vehicles to a single RUC Pass account. Each vehicle gets its own pass with a separate balance, and you can switch between them easily. One account, all your vehicles sorted.
Standard is for everyday drivers with no special requirements. Student and Super Gold passes both offer 15% off all RUC purchases. Student requires a valid student ID, and Super Gold requires a valid Super Gold card. All three work the same way at the counter and online.
How It Works In-Store
Walk into any of our 2,000+ partner locations, present your RUC Pass at the counter, and tell the staff how much RUC you'd like to buy. They scan your pass, you pay, and that's it. The RUC is automatically applied to your linked vehicle. No paperwork, no rego details to recite, no waiting. It's as easy as topping up a prepaid phone.
No. Your vehicle is already linked to your RUC Pass. When the retailer scans your pass, the system knows which vehicle to apply the RUC to. Just hand over your pass and pay.
Your RUC licence is issued instantly. The distance purchased is applied to your vehicle immediately, and there's no processing delay. You'll see the transaction in your account straight away.

Topping Up Online
Absolutely. Log into your RUC Pass account online or through the app, choose your vehicle, pick an amount, and pay. Your RUC licence is issued instantly, so there's no need to leave the couch.
You can top up in flexible amounts such as $10, $20, $50, $100, or custom amounts. Pick what works for your driving needs. There's no minimum commitment and no lock-in.
The RUC Pass app is coming soon on both iOS and Android. In the meantime, you can manage everything through our mobile-friendly website or by visiting any of our 2,000+ retail locations.
Passes & Account
A physical RUC Pass makes in-store purchases fast and simple because you just scan and pay. For online-only purchases, you can manage everything through your account without a physical pass.
Contact us and we'll deactivate your old pass and issue a replacement. Your account balance and vehicle details are safe because they're tied to your account, not the physical pass.
Yes. You can check your balance anytime by logging into your account online, through the app (coming soon), or by asking at any RUC Pass retail location when you next top up.
Log into your account and go to your vehicle list. You can add a new vehicle by entering its plate number, or remove a vehicle you no longer need. Changes take effect immediately.
